7:19 am
>> well that's what we're trying to face. objects can come within 30 million miles of earth, but that's its area of space that we ne to search to find the objects that might be potential impact hazards to the earth. >> so much focus is on asteroids and this is part of a congressional program we're going to talk about, but what potential damage could something do? >> well first of all, the earth gets hit by stuff from space all of the time. the meteor shower this week was an example of small stuff. but we're worried about objects that are big enough to penetrate the atmosphere and do damage on the ground. so the object has to be about 30-meters in size to do that. so we're looking for objects that are bigger than 30-meters in size. and the current program that nasa has, we started in 1998, was to find all of the
7:20 am
asteroids that were one kill om eter, a little over half a mile in size and biller, because those would do the most damage if they were to hit the earth. >> what could happen if something that size hit the earth. >> it would be a bad day all around. you would have global affects. it would throw enough dust into the atmosphere or eject around the earth that the weather would be affected for years. luckily that kind of thing only happens every few million years but we want to make sure there is nothing that big that will threaten earth. >> you brought some props in with you. what are we looking at here? >> they come in all shapes and sizes. >> >> and bring that closer so we can see what you're looking at. >> there are -- they are little worlds into themselves. these are radar models. we do rar imaging to get an
7:21 am
idea of what they are shaped like. this one particular one happens to be a binary. this one i hold in my hand is a small object. this one is only about -- in real size, is only about 30- meters in size, a little bigger than your studio, so this is the smaller size that is a hazard. it represents how dark the objects are. they are black. they are black as cole and they are very dim and hard to detect. >> and a couple of important questions, because nasa is looking at this, these objects could be 30-40 years down the road. >> they are very dim. we have to be able to see down to 20,000 times what the human
7:22 am
eye can see. so they are very hard to detect and we need powerful telescopes to be able to see that dimly and they also have to be able to scan the sky. we need telescopes with a wilder field of view. >> so if you are able to get this equipment, if you spot one that is an imminent threat, then what can you do about it and present it from striking earth. >> the first step is to find them. you can't do anything about an object unless you find a threat. so that's the first thing. and if we have a robust enough detection program, the likelihood is that we'll find any threat decades if not sentures before it -- there is an impact to the earth. your question is what can we do? there is several techniques that have been studied, at least academically as to what
7:23 am
can be done. one of the leading ones that we know we have the technology for is to slam it with a spacecraft. and if you do that far enough in advance, years in advance, just the change of velocity of a few sent meters per second -- centimeters down the road is enough to miss direct it. another object is a nuclear device on a spacecraft that explodes the asteroid and blows off material from the surface and conservation of momentum, some of the material goes this way and the asteroid goes that way and so it's enough to change the velocity. >> and so you need to get there
7:24 am
years in the advance. >> that's the key. >> and thank you for joining us. and nasa continues to fight this threat that a lot of people don't think about. but if it does happen, a lot of people will be thinking about it. 23 minutes after the hour. and virginia governor's race out of this world. making it a prime destination for space travel. that's coming up. and another friday at the fair. holly is giving us a sneak peek at this year's montgomery county agricultural fair. stay with us.

before they get too sick. >> but euthanasia not true. >> no. >> and the president promises that your health care will be paid for. >> well not yet, it isn't. well the health care bill would be paid for and he keeps promising, but it would add hundreds of billions of dollars to the deficit over a decade. >> and we would be forced to pay for abortion. is that one true? >> it's fuzzy. there is nothing in the bill that says that. nothing in the bill in the house or senate that says it would be funded and it says no taxpayer money would be funded for abortion. but if you're getting a subsidy to pay for your premium then where is that money going? >> but isn't there subsidy that would be used for low income folks. >> both the house and senate
7:38 am
version, low and moderate income would receive subsisies to help with premiums. >> and the other one that is out there is that he bill calls for full government control much like the british and canadian system. >> and that's not true. we've debunked this many times. many groups have made the claims, but neither of the bills are calling for total government run system. >> and here is one that is hazy. would we be forced to take the government plan? what if our business or place of employment decides to go on this government plan, do i have any choice in the matter? do i have to go on that plan? >> it's open to individuals and small businesses and the house says over time maybe more businesses could be eligible to sign up. so if your business chooses to sign up, then you're into the public plan unless you choose to go off on your own and not accept your employers health care. >> there has been public outrage and there is talk that republicans are bust -- busing
7:39 am
in people and then democrats are busing in people. do we know if people are being bussed in and being staged as actors? >> i don't know that this is that surprising. i think most of the time when m it's organized, some people may be coming on their own. so i'm not sure there is -- we haven't done any kind of stories separating who is sending who. it hasn't quite risen to the level of something we wanted to focus on. >> thank you for answering these questions. we'll have these on the website but you got to the heart of what many people are wondering. and we didn't yell at each other. so that's great. lori robinson, managing editor of www.factcheck.org. thank you for being here. and it's 7:39 as we are waiting on new numbers on how far the virus has spread. swine flu scares on the u.s. men's soccer team. and he has changed music
